feb/march cover

Very excited about our new cover for feb/march 2013 photographed by the talented Tara Donne with Shana Faust's beautiful styling. We wanted to celebrate the unveiling of Scholastic Parent & Child 100 Greatest Movies for Kids with a fun and cozy at home feeling. This brother and sister duo couldn't have been more enthused and did a great job at "pretending" to watch their favorite movie! Any popcorn left?!

re-enchanted

Sometimes you are thrown back to where you grew up, the place where those adolescent years of discovery and angst form so much of who you are and at the same time what you want to get away from. We get engrossed in our new life, another life, and going back can carry with it a surge of emotions that leave you in a state of bewildered wonder. I found myself strolling beach, at once so familiar and foreign, rediscovering old places of childhood fantasy, asking what place does this have in who I am? Can we be re-enchanted? And how to include this in the life we have now?
These landscapes inhabit me as much as the mountains of Switzerland and the streets of Brooklyn.

photos from the top: Siesta Key beach, white sand, kayaking on the Gulf, the pier at Siesta Key, pink hues at the Sarasota Jungle Gardens, Jungle walk, The Old Salty Dog restaurant on Ken Thompson Parkway, Tara on Lido Key, Tara and Arion take a sunset plunge.

moma ps1

We have always been fortunate to live less than 15 minutes from MoMa's PS 1 contemporary art space. Something we don't take enough advantage of, especially on blistery wintery days like today. And so after spending most of the day huddled under the covers with books and movies, we got ourselves out of bed for an art romp.

Some highlights include, past Martha coworkers Julie Ho and Nicholas Andersen, of ConfettiSystem's 100 Arrangements, Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt's Tender Love Among the Junk (the colors just blew me away) and New Pictures of Common Objects. The latter could add among it's collection Fortunato's insane marizpan creation (see hamburger image below). Which by-the-way is now on Jan's birthday request list. Who would have known!

There is no reality except the one contained within us. That's why so many people live an unreal life. They take images outside them for reality and never allow the world within them to assert itself.

A stunning film, almost heart-breakingly so. There was so much richness that the two quotes below and the trailer just don't do it justice. I suppose only savoring a piece of his fish could even begin to give a hint to this man's devotion and gift.

"In order to make delicious food, you must taste delicious food"

"Always look ahead and above yourself. Always try to improve on yourself. Always strive to elevate your craft."

"This time for reflection also gave me the chance to correct myself". How beautiful indeed!
